5 THINGS TO SEE in HALLSTATT
Historic Center & Markplatz
The beautiful square located in the center of Hallstatt, surrounded by typical colored houses that seem to come out of a painting. In the middle of the square is a fountain, the main attraction, while in one corner we find a beautiful church built approximately in 1861.
Salzwelten / Salt Mines
You cannot say you have been to Hallstatt without having visited the Salzwelten salt mines whose extraction dates back to ancient times. The first tunnels were dug by hand. Through a guided tour you will venture inside these historic mines. Once the car is parked, a funicular will take you to the beginning of the route. From here, with a short walk, you will reach the beginning of the actual visit.
Hallstatt Museums
There are two main museums in this Austrian city. The Hallstatt Museum holds ancient artifacts from historic salt mines and cemeteries dating back to the Iron Age (more than 4,000 people were buried here). The other, the Welterbemuseum or World Heritage Museum, tells the story of the village and its surroundings from its origins up to the present day when Hallstatt was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Hallstatt Cemetery & Ossuary
One of the most beautiful cemeteries in the world with a spectacular view of the lake and the city. Don't miss the ossuary with more than a thousand skulls painted and identified with dates and names.
Hallstatt Churches
Among the main churches, do not miss the Catholic Parish of Hallstatt, in a panoramic position over the town, and the Evangelical Church of Christ, dating back to the 19th century.Outside Hallstatt, in Obertraun, the Calvary Church is worth a visit.

Most BEAUTIFUL VIEWPOINTS in HALLSTATT
The best panoramic point from which to admire the splendor of the town of Hallstatt? Here are the ones we recommend:
This is the best-known image of Hallstatt, the one that attracts thousands of people and never disappoints. We assure you that you would never stop taking pictures. It is located on Gosaumühlstraße and can only be reached on foot.
The cantilevered panoramic terrace with breathtaking views of the lake and the surrounding mountains. At 350 meters above Hallstatt, it is easily accessible by funicular up to the salt mines.
On the opposite side of point 1. of the Classic Postcard Panorama, right at the entrance to the town. Next to the fishermen's huts, you will find a small patio by the lake. From here you get a wonderful picture of the wooden houses built into the mountainside. It is located near the tourist information centre.
It will seem strange, but one of the things not to be missed in Hallstatt is to visit its charming cemetery from which you can enjoy a splendid view of the lake and the pointed Lutheran church.
Just outside Hallstatt you can admire the wonderful Dachstein Caves, a network of caves among the most spectacular in the area, more than a thousand meters deep. Get ready for ice sculptures, visit the famous Giant Ice Cave (Rieseneishöhle) with its many large caverns and magnificent frozen waterfalls and the Mammoth Cave (Mammuthöhle) carved out by an ancient underground river. For more info and to book a visit, click here.
A few kilometers from Hallstatt are the beautiful Wadbachstrub Waterfalls with a height of about 90 meters.
One of the most beautiful activities to do in the summer is to rent a boat and take a tour around the lake, to enjoy the view of the city from a special perspective.
For those who want to explore the area even further, we recommend an excursion to Dachstein Salzkammergut, imposing mountains that can be accessed with various cable cars, and the 5 Fingers, a viewing platform made up of five platforms (fingers) overlooking the surrounding valleys. Each platform is designed for a different experience: from the glass floor to the frame for the perfect photo.
