TRAVEL TIPS about ALBANIA by World Mappers
The official currency in Albania is the Albanian lek (ALL). Local banknotes and coins are widely used, but in tourist areas euros and credit cards are often accepted. Withdraw cash from ATMs for small payments, as many shops and restaurants do not accept electronic payments.
A valid identity card is sufficient to visit Albania. However, it is important to remember that the Italian health card is not valid in the country, so you will need to cover any medical expenses. The best equipped health facilities are mainly located in the north, in Tirana, so in an emergency you may need transportation to reach them.
Albania is generally considered a safe country for tourists, with low crime rates. However, as with any destination, it is important to maintain basic precautions, such as avoiding isolated areas at night and being careful with your belongings. Tourist areas are well-supervised and welcoming, but it is always best to remain vigilant.
In Albania, the main modes of transport are buses, minibuses, taxis and rental cars. Intercity buses connect major cities and tourist destinations, but routes can be infrequent and not always on time. Minibuses (shared vans) are a popular option for getting between cities, especially in rural areas. For convenience, you can rent a car, but roads, especially outside the major cities, can be winding and poorly signposted. Taxis are plentiful in the cities, but it is advisable to agree on a price beforehand. Alternatively, apps such as Uber or Bolt are available in the larger cities. For visiting coastal or more remote areas, it may be useful to rent a motorbike or scooter. Remember that driving in Albania is on the right side of the road!
The best time to visit Albania is from spring (April-June) to early autumn (September-October). During these months, the weather is pleasant, with mild temperatures and sunny days, ideal for exploring the cities, beaches and natural parks. July and August can be very hot, especially in the coastal areas, but they are also the months when the beaches are liveliest and most popular. Winter, on the other hand, is cold and rainy, so less recommended for a tourist trip.
