Staying in a historic building, surrounded by years of history and priceless beauties, but at the same time feeling at home ... Do you think it is impossible? Absolutely not! A stay at the Hotel Schloss Leopoldskron in Salzburg made us experience all this. Before telling you about our experience, let's give you some historical notes on this structure to make you understand why we were so excited about being able to sleep in this hotel.
Aufenthalt in einem historischen Gebäude, umgeben von jahrelanger Geschichte und unschätzbaren Schönheiten, aber gleichzeitig wie zu Hause fühlen ... Ist es unmöglich? Absolut nicht! Ein Aufenthalt im Hotel Schloss Leopoldskron in Salzburg hat uns all dies erlebt. Bevor wir Ihnen von unseren Erfahrungen erzählen, geben wir Ihnen einige historische Anmerkungen zu dieser Struktur, damit Sie verstehen, warum wir so aufgeregt waren, in diesem Hotel schlafen zu können.
Schloss Leopoldskron was built in 1736 on the shores of Lake Leopoldskroner Weiher by the Prince Archbishop of Salzburg, Leopold Anton Freiherr von Firmian, as a family residence. In 1744, Leopold ceded the palace to his nephew, Count Laktanz Firmian (who enriched the castle with a collection of paintings with works by artists such as Rembrandt, Rubens and Titian, unfortunately no longer present). After his death in the same year, the archbishop's body was buried in the cathedral of Salzburg, but his heart was buried under the chapel of the Schloss, which can still be visited today if you stay in the palace.
In the following centuries the Schloss passed from hand to hand, from owner to owner, falling into disrepair, until 1918, when it was bought by Max Reinhardt, Europe's most famous theater director and co-founder of the Salzburg Festival, who gave new splendor at Schloss Leopoldskron. But that's not all! In the Sixties the building became the set of the Hollywood film The Sound of Music starring Julie Andrews. Taking a picture of us in the exact spot where they took one of the most famous photos of the film with the whole von Trapp family was really exciting! Furthermore, in 2014 Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld chose the Schloss as the location for the Mètiers d'Art collection.
Schloss Leopoldskron wurde 1736 am Ufer des Leopoldskroner Weiher vom Salzburger Fürsterzbischof Leopold Anton Freiherr von Firmian als Familienresidenz. 1744 gab Leopold das Schloss an seinen Neffen Graf Laktanz Firmian ab (der das Schloss mit einer Gemäldesammlung mit Werken von Künstlern wie Rembrandt, Rubens und Tizian bereicherte, die leider nicht mehr vorhanden waren). Nach seinem Tod im selben Jahr wurde die Leiche des Erzbischofs im Salzburger Dom beigesetzt, sein Herz jedoch unter der Schlosskapelle, die auch heute noch besichtigt werden kann, wenn Sie im Schloss bleiben. In den folgenden Jahrhunderten verfiel das Schloss von Hand zu Hand, von Besitzer zu Besitzer, und verfiel bis 1918, als es von Max Reinhardt, Europas berühmtestem Theaterdirektor und Mitbegründer der Salzburger Festspiele, gekauft wurde, der neuen Glanz verlieh auf Schloss Leopoldskron. Aber das ist nicht alles! In den sechziger Jahren wurde das Gebäude zum Set des Hollywood-Films The Sound of Music, mit Julie Andrews. Es war wirklich aufregend, ein Foto von uns genau dort zu machen, wo sie mit der ganzen Familie von Trapp eines der berühmtesten Fotos des Films gemacht haben! Darüber hinaus wählten Chanel und Karl Lagerfeld 2014 das Schloss als Standort für die Sammlung Mètiers d'Art.

Today the Schloss Leopoldskron, in addition to being a beautiful hotel is also the headquarters of the Salzburg Global Seminar, an international organization founded in 1947 to, we quote from their website, "challenge current and future leaders to shape a better world" . Among other things, thanks to the Salzburg Global Seminar in 2013 the Salzburg Global LGBT Forum came to life with people and testimonies from all over the world in support of the LGBT reality.
Heute ist das Schloss Leopoldskron nicht nur ein wunderschönes Hotel, sondern auch Sitz des Salzburg Global Seminar, einer 1947 gegründeten internationalen Organisation, die laut ihrer Website "aktuelle und zukünftige Führungskräfte herausfordern soll, eine bessere Welt zu gestalten". Unter anderem dank des Salzburg Global Seminar 2013 wurde das Salzburg Global LGBT Forum mit Menschen und Zeugnissen aus aller Welt zur Unterstützung der LGBT-Realität ins Leben gerufen.
Arriving at the building we meet one of the members of the Salzburg Global Seminar, the Vice President and Head of Public Affairs, Thomas Biebl. Thomas talks to us about the Schloss Leopoldskron and the Global Seminar with a lot of passion, he explains the history of the building and its organization.
We discover that in the actual Schloss there are 12 suites, while in the adjacent building, obtained from the old service areas of the palace, the Meierhof, there are 55 rooms. All this, near the lake and immersed in a park of seventeen acres at the complete and exclusive availability of guests. A true oasis of peace and tranquility not far from the splendid center of Salzburg and its fortress. We had the honor of staying in the Schloss, in one of the suites, the one named after Leopold Firmian. A room furnished with a beautiful mix of antique furniture and modern design elements, as if you want to remind guests that you are staying in a structure with a very rich history, without forgetting comfort and charm.
Bei der Ankunft im Gebäude treffen wir eines der Mitglieder des Salzburger Globalseminars, den Vizepräsidenten und Leiter für öffentliche Angelegenheiten, Thomas Biebl. Thomas spricht mit viel Leidenschaft über das Schloss Leopoldskron und das Globale Seminar, er erklärt die Geschichte des Gebäudes und seiner Organisation.
Wir stellen fest, dass es im eigentlichen Schloss 12 Suiten gibt, während im angrenzenden Gebäude, das aus den alten Servicebereichen des Schlosses, dem Meierhof, stammt, 55 Zimmer vorhanden sind. All dies am See und inmitten eines 17 Hektar großen Parks bei vollständiger und exklusiver Verfügbarkeit der Gäste. Eine wahre Oase des Friedens und der Ruhe unweit des herrlichen Salzburger Zentrums und seiner Festung. Wir hatten die Ehre, im Schloss in einer der nach Leopold Firmian benannten Suiten zu übernachten. Ein Zimmer, das mit einer schönen Mischung aus antiken Möbeln und modernen Designelementen eingerichtet ist, als ob ihr die Gäste daran erinnern möchtet, dass ihr sich in einem Gebäude mit einer sehr reichen Geschichte befindet, ohne auf Komfort und Charme zu verzichten.
La cosa più bella di un soggiorno allo Schloss Leopoldskron? Avere la sensazione che tutto il castello sia a propria disposizione. E in un certo senso è proprio così. Si può girare liberamente per le varie sale (una più bella dell'altra e con ancora gli arredi originali) e immergersi nell'atmosfera ricca di storia di questo posto. Leggere un libro nella biblioteca o fare colazione nel salone principale circondati da affreschi e lampadari centenari non ha prezzo! Se poi siete particolarmente fortunati, potrete soggiornare direttamente in quello che era l'appartamento privato di Max Reinhardt (con addirittura un accesso segreto dalla biblioteca!).
The best thing about a stay at Schloss Leopoldskron? Have the feeling that the whole castle is at your disposal. And in a way it is. You can freely walk around the various rooms (one more beautiful than the other and still with the original furnishings) and immerse yourself in the atmosphere rich in history of this place. Reading a book in the library or having breakfast in the main hall surrounded by centenary frescoes and chandeliers is priceless! And if you are particularly lucky, you can stay directly in what used to be Max Reinhardt's private apartment (with even a secret access from the library!).
Das Beste an einem Aufenthalt im Schloss Leopoldskron? Ihr habt das Gefühl, dass das ganze Schloss zu Ihrer Verfügung steht. Und in gewisser Weise ist es. Ihr könnt frei durch die verschiedenen Räume gehen (einer schöner als der andere und immer noch mit der ursprünglichen Einrichtung) und in die Atmosphäre eintauchen, die reich an Geschichte dieses Ortes ist. Ein Buch in der Bibliothek zu lesen oder in der Haupthalle zu frühstücken, umgeben von hundertjährigen Fresken und Kronleuchtern, ist von unschätzbarem Wert! Und wenn ihr besonders viel Glück habt, könnt ihr direkt in der ehemaligen Privatwohnung von Max Reinhardt übernachten (sogar mit einem geheimen Zugang von der Bibliothek!).

A unique experience. This is what comes to mind when we think of the Schloss Leopoldskron in Salzburg. Lately we have seen a lot of beautiful hotels but a place so rich in history, art, culture and charm had not happened to us yet and we were really excited! We love Salzburg very much (those who have been following us for a while know this) and staying in this palace has only increased our love for this city. If you too want to experience the magic we told you about, you can't miss a stay at Schloss Leopoldskron.
Ein einzigartiges Erlebnis. Das fällt uns ein, wenn wir an das Schloss Leopoldskron in Salzburg denken. In letzter Zeit haben wir viele schöne Hotels gesehen, aber ein Ort, der so reich an Geschichte, Kunst, Kultur und Charme ist, war uns noch nicht passiert und wir waren wirklich aufgeregt! Wir lieben Salzburg sehr (diejenigen, die uns schon eine Weile folgen, wissen das) und der Aufenthalt in diesem Schloss hat unsere Liebe zu dieser Stadt nur noch verstärkt.
