5 THINGS TO SEE in MERAN
Thermal Baths of Merano
Today Merano is a city renowned as a healing center thanks to its favorable climate and its healing waters. The Merano Thermal Baths are located right in the city centre. For more information you can consult this page.
Trauttmansdorff Castle and Gardens
One of our favorite places in Merano, linked to the story of Princess Sissi, queen of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. A short distance from the center of Merano, you can visit the marvelous Trauttmansdorff castle, where the emperor, Sissi's husband, stayed there twice during his visit to the city. Around the castle you can visit the fantastic botanical garden and the beauty of the different seasonal blooms. The castle now houses the first museum in South Tyrol dedicated to tourism, the Touriseum.
Laubengasse
The 400m long Via dei Portici is one of the most famous pedestrian and commercial areas of the city. Even today it retains the beauty of the past, with its typical houses and characteristic arcades.
Powder Tower (Pulverturm) & Tappainer Promenade
The ancient tower of Merano, the last evidence of an ancient castle in the area. Easily reachable on foot following the Tappeiner Promenade which starts from the historic centre. From the top you will have a wonderful panoramic view of the city. The Walk, conceived and financed by the famous doctor Dr. Tappeiner in the late 1900s, will lead you to the Garden of Aromatic Herbs.
Cathedral of Merano
Inside the historic center of the Alpine town, you can admire the wonderful Gothic Cathedral, one of the main monuments of the city, flanked by an elegant bell tower.

TRAVEL TIPS about MERAN by World Mappers
From Merano it is possible to reach Merano 2000 by cable car, a huge, very interesting and panoramic skiing and hiking area. Here you will be spoiled for choice on which path to take in order to get in touch with the true essence of the Dolomites. We recommend those that lead to the Meraner Huette, Kuhleiten refuge, Kesselberg refuge and Lake Pancrazio.
The city of Merano has always been linked to the figure of Princess Sissi, think that a statue was also erected in her honor in the central park of the city. In addition, a hiking trail called "Sissi's Path" was inaugurated a few years ago (click here for more information).
One of the most beautiful activities to do in Meran is the walk along the banks of the Passirio river, from the post office bridge to the theater bridge. This is the busiest promenade ever, along which you can admire fantastic buildings such as the Kurhaus, symbol of thermal Meran, used for the entertainment of guests with dancing parties, dinners and conferences.
The city would not have the same charm without the beautiful Meran Christmas markets. During the Christmas period, in fact, the city is filled with magic. In the air you can smell the scent of mulled wine and typical sweets. The Merano Christmas Market is one of the largest in the area, in fact it hosts more than 80 exhibitors, arranged along the streets overlooking the river. A truly suggestive atmosphere that will captivate you. Try the traditional "Feuerzangenbowle", a loaf of sugar soaked in rum, which is dripped into a copper pot filled with red wine.
If you want to discover a secret Meran, then venture into the Rione Steinach, the oldest area of the city, dating back to the 12th century, where you can still breathe the typical atmosphere of the Middle Ages among the narrow streets.
Don't miss a trip to the beautiful Castel Tirolo, just outside Merano. It is a castle that houses the historical-cultural museum of the Province of Bolzano. The village of Tyrol is a real pearl. From here starts a path that will lead you to the beautiful manor, surrounded by fantastic vineyards.
The Most BEAUTIFUL VIEWPOINTS of MERAN
Enjoy the city from the best viewpoints of Merano (and surroundings) that we recommend:
Tappainer Walk
Knottkino Observation Deck (outside the city)
Meran 2000
Castel Tirolo (not far from Merano)
Just outside Merano, we recommend a trip to Lagundo. Here you will find one of the most popular places to take a nice selfie. Waiting for you, in fact, there will be Giant Chairs, also known as the "Thrones of Trauttmansdorff", positioned on the Tell, at the pass between the Val Venosta and the Merano basin from which you will enjoy a breathtaking view. You can get there easily by clicking here.
