ANTELOPE CANYON in ARIZONA

Discover this magical and famous place in the United States of America

WHAT IS ANTELOPE CANYON

Here is one of the most impressive places to see and visit in the Western United States. Antelope Canyon is a deep rather than wide canyon and was formed by the erosion of water flowing through the rock. It is located in northern Arizona near the town of Page and Glen Canyon Recreational Park and is run by the Navajo Indians. Antelope Canyon is one of the most beautiful places we've ever seen! This place is full of magic and is one of the places we have wanted to see for a long time.

HOW TO GET THERE and WHERE it is the ANTELOPE CANYON

To get to Antelope Canyon you need to reach the town of Page, on the border between northern Arizona and southern Utah. Located next to the aforementioned Glen Canyon Recreation Area, and specifically, on the shores of Lake Powell, the canyon sits at an elevation of 1,200 meters. Antelope Canyon is one of the tribal parks on the Navajo Indian Reservation.

WHAT TO SEE AT ANTELOPE CANYON

Antelope Canyon is divided into two zones, the Upper Canyon and the Lower Canyon. The most visited and most suitable for taking pictures is the upper canyon.

UPPER OR LOWER ANTELOPE CANYON?

The most important decision to make before visiting Antelope Canyon is choosing between Upper Antelope Canyon and Lower Antelope Canyon, or visiting both. Both sections of the canyon have their positives and are worth seeing, so the decision will likely depend more on your budget, fitness level, and your willingness to take on the crowds.

Upper Antelope Canyon

This is the most photographed Canyon, here you can see rays of light peeking out from the canyon ceiling, illuminating the surrounding terrain and rocks. While the beauty of this natural phenomenon has made Upper Antelope Canyon extremely popular, it has brought large masses of tourists to visit it and therefore it is always much more crowded than Lower Antelope Canyon. However, it is undoubtedly the best option for anyone who wants a shorter and easier round trip excursion.

Lower Antelope Canyon

Lower Antelope Canyon is as beautiful as Upper Antelope Canyon, although you won't be able to see the famous light beams. But the good news is that the canyon will be far less crowded and quieter than Upper Antelope Canyon. The path is one way and is longer and more difficult than the other, you will have to climb up and down several flights of stairs. Not recommended for those with reduced mobility.

Upper or Lower Antelope Canyon, which one to choose then?

Here we are then to the most frequently asked question about Antelope Canyon, which part to choose? If you want to save money then you can do the Lower Antelope Canyon, in fact the prices change a lot and are lower. If you are planning to visit Upper Antelope Canyon, it is best to go there in the summer, at noon, when you can see the rays of light filtering into the canyon. Otherwise, you will miss out on one of the most spectacular features of this canyon. But if you can afford it, then you can visit both Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon, so I would have a complete overview.

HOW LONG and WHEN to visit ANTELOPE CANYON

Antelope Canyon is open all year round, but the best time to visit Antelope Canyon will depend on what you want to see and how you want to see it. The best time to visit Antelope Canyon if you want to see the rays of light at the top is from late March to early October. On the other hand, if you prefer to avoid the tourist crowds, November to March is best, but you won't be able to see the light beams. If you want to see the rays of light in Upper Antelope Canyon, the best time to go to Antelope Canyon is noon. If you plan your visit between 11am and 1.30 pm, when the sunlight is perpendicular to the canyon, you will have a better chance of seeing these famous Antelope Canyon light rays.

WHAT ARE THE TOURS to visit ANTELOPE CANYON

To visit Antelope Canyon you can choose between an all inclusive organized trip, where they already include the canyon tour, or if you are a do-it-yourself tourist like us, you must book this excursion with the Navajo Indians (Antelope Canyon Tour), because it is in one of their reserves. Once you have reached the starting point of the tour, with a 4 × 4 style van you can reach the beginning of the chosen canyon through a sandy road in about 15 minutes. During the visit with the guide, you cross the deep crack that originates the narrow canyon, during which you can see and photograph the different corners of Antelope Canyon. Of course, you are only allowed to see Antelope Canyon on a guided tour, so you'll need to sign up for one of the tours organized by companies in the area.

WHAT TO SEE and DO near ANTELOPE CANYON?

Horseshoe Bend

Just 6km from Antelope Canyon is another of the most beautiful places to see in the Western United States, Horseshoe Bend. It is a viewpoint of the Colorado River that makes a total curve, just in the shape of a horseshoe. To get to Horseshoe Bend, you need to leave your car in the parking lot and walk to the viewpoint for about 15 minutes. The climb is a bit difficult because the road is sandy. Better to have closed shoes with a good grip, because when you arrive at the viewpoint there is no type of protective railing. An incredible panorama will open up in front of you. If you go at sunset or sunrise you will be breathless! Admission is free but parking costs around $ 10 per car.

Glen Canyon

One of the most beautiful and unexpected places we have seen, a breathtaking gorge carved by the Colorado River where kayaking is also possible.

Lake Powell

Another of the sites to see near Page is Lake Powell, an artificial lake created with water from the Colorado River, with a dam.

Boat Excursion through Antelope Canyon

An alternative to visiting Antelope Canyon on foot is to take a boat ride, floating among the colorful sandstone walls. Tours depart from Antelope Point Marina in Lake Powell or Wahweap Marina at Lake Powell Resort.
