USEFUL INFO COLOMBIA
Practical information to organize the trip with details about the best period to go, necessary documents, how to get around and much more.

WHEN TO GO to COLOMBIA
The best time to visit Colombia depends on the region you wish to explore, due to its climatic variety. In general, Colombia's climate is tropical, with warm temperatures year-round. However, Colombia has two main seasons: the dry season and the rainy season.
The dry season, which runs from December to March, is ideal for visiting most regions of the country, particularly the coastal areas and cities such as Bogotá and Medellín. This is also the best time to explore Colombia's Caribbean beaches, such as Cartagena and San Andrés.
However, the rainy season, from April to November, is a good option for those seeking a quieter visit, as there are fewer tourists and the landscapes are greener and more lush. However, the rains can be intense, especially in mountainous and tropical regions, such as the Amazon zone.
DOCUMENTS REQUIRED for COLOMBIA
To enter Colombia, you need a valid passport with at least six months remaining validity. A visa is not required for stays up to 90 days, unless for work or study purposes. A return or onward ticket is recommended. In some cases, proof of sufficient funds for the stay may be required. In addition, depending on the health situation, documents related to vaccinations (such as yellow fever vaccination) or COVID-19 tests may be required, so it is always best to check up-to-date regulations before traveling.
LOCAL CURRENCY in COLOMBIA
The local currency of Colombia is the Colombian peso (COP). Coins in circulation are 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 pesos, while banknotes come in denominations of 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, 50,000 and 100,000 pesos. You can exchange currency easily in banks, exchange offices or shopping malls. Credit cards are accepted in many tourist areas.
The exchange rate between the Colombian peso (COP) and the euro (EUR) is about 1 COP = 0.00022 EUR. This means that 1 euro is equivalent to about 4,500 Colombian pesos. Keep in mind that exchange rates can change over time; it is advisable to check up-to-date rates before transacting or traveling!
LOCAL TIPS in COLOMBIA
In Colombia, tips are generally appreciated but not obligatory. In restaurants, it is common to leave a 10% tip on the bill if the service was satisfactory. In hotels, tips for service staff or porters are between 1,000 and 5,000 pesos, depending on the service. In cabs, a small tip is appreciated but not required.
SICURITY and CRIME in COLOMBIA
Security in Colombia has improved dramatically in recent decades, but it is still important to pay attention to crime, especially in some areas. Major cities such as Bogotá, Medellín, and Cartagena are generally safe for tourists, but it is always advisable to be cautious, especially at night or in uncrowded areas. Common crimes include theft, pickpocketing and scams, so it is helpful to always keep an eye on your belongings and avoid flaunting valuables. Some rural or remote areas, such as those near borders or in regions with a history of conflict, may be less safe due to organized crime or guerrilla activities. It is always a good idea to inquire about local security advisories and, if possible, use organized guides or tours. In addition, it is advisable to register with your consulate in case of emergencies.
