TIANMEN MOUNTAIN in CHINA

Practical information to help you organize your trip to this destination, including details on when to go, required documents, how to get around, and much more.

BRIEF HISTORY of TIANMEN MOUNTAIN (HEAVEN'S GATE MOUNTAIN)

Tianmen Mountain is one of China's most iconic mountains and represents a natural and spiritual landmark of the Zhangjiajie region. Its name derives from the spectacular “Tianmen Cave” (Gate of Paradise), a huge natural opening in the rock about 130 meters high, considered over the centuries a sacred and mysterious place. Unlike the nearby Zhangjiajie National Forest Park (famous for the “Avatar Mountains”), Tianmen Mountain has a more recent tourist history: it has been developed as a modern scenic attraction especially since the years ’90 and 2000, with the construction of the very long urban cable car, scenic roads and suspended routes. Over time, the mountain has become one of China's most famous attractions thanks to the combination of extreme nature and spectacular infrastructure: the 99 hairpin bends road, the world-record-breaking cable car, and the glass walkways suspended in the void. The landscape is the result of millions of years of erosion on limestone and sandstone rocks, which have created vertical walls, natural caves and breathtaking cliffs, immersed in dense and often fog-shrouded subtropical vegetation.

ATTENTION:

When planning a trip to Zhangjiajie, it is essential not to confuse the different areas, as the names are often used generically but indicate completely different places.

Zhangjiajie City is the main urban center and arrival point (airport, station and hotel), but it is not a natural destination. From here you can reach the two main attractions of the area:

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park → the park of the “Avatar Mountains”, about 30–40 minutes from the city (Wulingyuan area)

Tianmen Mountain → the scenic mountain with cable car and Heaven's Gate, located directly near the city

To visit the Forest Park, it is recommended to sleep in Wulingyuan, while for Tianmen Mountain it is more comfortable to sleep in Zhangjiajie City.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO VISIT TIANMEN MOUNTAIN

It takes an average of 4–6 hours to visit Tianmen Mountain.

Calmly and including all the routes (skywalk, cave and cable car), it can take up a whole day, especially in the busiest periods.

HOW MUCH DOES TIANMEN MOUNTAIN COST

The full ticket (cable car + panoramic bus + access to the main routes) costs around RMB 250–300. Some glass walkways may charge a small fee.

HOW THE TICKET FOR TIANMEN MOUNTAIN WORKS

The ticket to Tianmen Mountain is organized in a “single package” way and includes almost all of the inland transportation system. It generally includes the main outbound and/or return cable car, the panoramic bus on the 99 hairpin bends road and access to the main visitable areas of the mountain. The ticket is linked to your passport and often requires booking in time slots, especially during peak seasons. This system serves to manage the tourist flow on one of Zhangjiajie's most visited attractions. Some specific experiences, such as some glass walkways (skywalks), may require a small extra fee, but most of the route is already included in the basic ticket.

ROUTES to DO for TIANMEN MOUNTAIN

Route A – The most scenic (recommended in most cases)

You start from the cable car station in the city and travel the first stretch of the famous Tianmen Mountain Cableway to the intermediate station. From here, continue by bus along the spectacular 99 hairpin bends road to Heaven's Gate (Tianmen Cave), reach the top with the escalators inside the mountain (or by climbing 999 steps), and return by express cable car to the park entrance.

Route B – Alternative entrance with greater flexibility

It's the reverse itinerary. You ascend from the city by express cable car to the Gate of Paradise, reach the summit by escalators (or by climbing 999 steps), then descend by bus along the 99 hairpin bends to the intermediate station and conclude your return journey with the first section of the historic cable car towards the city.

Route C – The fastest and most stable (backup or high turnout)

It involves climbing and descending by express cable car, without going down the road of the 99 hairpin bends. It's the fastest option and recommended for those who suffer from car sickness, but it doesn't allow you to experience either the historic cable car from the city center or the spectacular scenic road.

VISITABLE AREAS of TIANMEN MOUNTAIN

Tianmen Mountain's main visitable areas are developed along a scenic route between the mountaintop, natural caves, and suspended infrastructure.

  • Mountain peak (Upper Plateau): panoramic area at high altitude reachable by cable car, characterised by paths and observation points over the surrounding mountains. There's even a Burger King up here.

  • Tianmen Cave (Gate of Paradise): A large natural opening in the rock, approximately 130 meters high, accessible via a staircase of 999 steps or escalators within the mountain.

  • Glass Skywalk: Transparent walkways attached to the mountain wall that offer direct views of the void and cliffs.

  • Road of 99 hairpin bends: A scenic serpentine road that connects the base of the mountain to the Tianmen Cave area, traveled by bus.

  • Forest areas at high altitude: paths and walkways immersed in vegetation that connect different panoramic points of the mountain.

TIPS for VISITING TIANMEN MOUNTAIN in CHINA by the World Mappers

  • Visiting Tianmen Mountain requires good organization, especially during peak seasons.

  • It is recommended to arrive early in the morning to avoid queues at the cable car and have more time to explore the mountain at your leisure. Weather conditions can change quickly: fog is frequent and can reduce visibility, so it's helpful to have flexibility in your schedule.

  • Comfortable shoes are essential, because even though many sections are served by cable cars and buses, there are still long stairs and walking at high altitude. On busy days, it's best to start at the top of the mountain and gradually descend to avoid the main flows.

  • It is recommended to check in advance which route is active on the day of your visit, because flow management may change depending on the wind or the safety conditions of the cable car and skywalks.

  • If you're in Zhangjiajie, don't miss 72 Wonder Tower, one of the city's most scenic spots. We recommend arriving around 6:00 PM to watch the folk performances and staying until 7:53 PM, when each evening the tower lights up with over 36,000 LED lights, creating a spectacular light and visual effects show. The area remains open until 10:00 PM and the evening ticket costs around RMB 88, but you can save money by purchasing the day ticket (around RMB 20-48) and entering around 4:00 PM, staying until the evening at no additional cost. For the most beautiful photos, place on the other side of the road: you will have a perfect view of the fully illuminated tower. The show lasts an average of 1.5–2 hours and is ideal as an evening activity after Tianmen Mountain or other attractions in Zhangjiajie.
