BRIEF HISTORY of the COCORA VALLEY
The Cocora Valley, located in the Quindío region of Colombia, is part of the Los Nevados National Park. Named after Princess Cocora, daughter of a quimbaya chief. This valley is famous for its tall wax palms, national symbol of Colombia, which can reach 60 meters. In the past, the area was inhabited by indigenous peoples and later explored by Spanish colonizers. Today, the Cocora Valley is a popular eco-tourism destination, thanks to its spectacular landscapes, biodiversity and hiking trails that cross misty forests and mountains.
WHERE IS THE VALLEY OF COCORA
The Valley of Cocora is located in Colombia, in the department of Quindío, in the central Andean area of the country. It is located within the Los Nevados National Park and is part of the coffee region, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The nearest village is Salento, from where excursions to the valley start. Surrounded by mountains and misty forests, it is home to the iconic wax palms, a national symbol of Colombia.
WHEN TO VISIT THE COCORA VALLEY
The best time to visit the Valle del Cocora is during the dry seasons: from December to February and July-August, when the rainfall is minimal and the trails are more enjoyable. In the rainy months (April-May and October-November) afternoon rains cause mud and slippery patches, but offer lush landscapes and nebulous atmospheres . The best times to walk are in the morning, when the weather is more stable.
HOW EXPENSIVE IT IS TO GO TO THE COCORA VALLEY
Visiting the Valle del Cocora is quite cheap. Transport by jeep from Salento costs about 8,000 COP (about 2 euros). The entrance to the trails varies from 20,000 to 46,000 COP (5-10 euro), depending on the route chosen. If you want to add extra experiences, such as a private guide or horse ride, the cost can go up to 120,000 COP (around 30 euros). A local lunch costs between 15,000 and 30,000 COP.
HOW TO VISIT THE COCORA VALLEY
To visit the Valle del Cocora, the ideal starting point is the village of Salento, in the Quindío. From there, the typical "Willys" jeeps take you to the entrance of the valley in 30 minutes. You can explore it on foot through well-marked trails, with routes of different durations and difficulties, or on horseback. It is advisable to leave early in the morning, bring trekking clothing and water, and consider a guide to learn more about local flora and fauna.
TREKKING in the Cocora Valley
Trekking in the Cocora Valley is one of the most popular activities in Colombia. The classic route is a loop of about 5-6 hours that crosses misty forests, suspension bridges, rivers and the iconic area of wax palms. It starts from the jeep parking and you can choose between a direct route or one longer and adventurous. It is recommended to wear trekking shoes, bring water and start walking in the morning to avoid rain.

Acaime Nature Reserve (Colibrí Sanctuary)
This small reserve, reachable by a trekking of about 2 hours, is famous for the presence of hummingbirds, butterflies and endemic flora. On arrival you are greeted with a typical hot drink. Leave early in the morning! Weather conditions are more stable and there is less chance of rain. In addition, you can enjoy the valley with fewer tourists, having more peace to take pictures and observe nature. The morning lights are also perfect for spectacular photography.
