NATIONAL PARK of TAYRONA in COLOMBIA

Practical information to better organize your trip to this destination with details on when to go, necessary documents, how to get around and much more

SHORT HISTORY of the TAYRONA NATIONAL PARK

The Tayrona National Park, located on the Caribbean coast of Colombia, was created in 1969 to protect the area’s natural ecosystems and cultural heritage. It is famous for its rich biodiversity and the archaeological remains of the Tayrona culture, an ancient indigenous population that inhabited the region. The park has been closed for conservation and safety reasons, but it is now one of the most popular tourist destinations, with a balance between environmental protection and sustainable tourism.

WHERE IS THE TAYRONA NATIONAL PARK

The Tayrona National Park is located on the Caribbean coast of Colombia, in the department of Magdalena. It is located about 34 kilometers northeast of the city of Santa Marta. The park stretches along a coastal strip between sea and mountain, including beaches, tropical forests and mountains of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. Its strategic location makes it accessible from both Santa Marta and other tourist destinations in the Colombian Caribbean region.

WHEN TO VISIT THE TAYRONA NATIONAL PARK

The best time to visit Tayrona National Park is during the dry season, from December to March, when the rains are less frequent and the weather is ideal for hiking and bathing on the beach. Avoid the months of April and November, which are more rainy. During the New Year’s holidays and public holidays, the park can be very crowded, so it is advisable to book in advance and arrive early to better enjoy the experience.

HOW EXPENSIVE IT IS TO GO TO TAYRONA NATIONAL PARK

The entrance to the Tayrona National Park costs about 65,000 COP (about 15-18 euros) for foreign tourists, while for Colombians the price is lower. To this are added any costs for guides, equipment rental or overnight stays within the park. Transportation from Santa Marta or other nearby locations varies according to the chosen means of transport, with economical options such as buses or collective taxis. It is advisable to bring cash and check updated prices before the visit.

HOW TO VISIT THE TAYRONA NATIONAL PARK

The park is mainly visited on foot, through paths that connect beaches, natural areas and archaeological sites. The main entrance is near Calabazo or Zaino, where you can buy your ticket and go for excursions of different duration and difficulty. It is recommended to wear comfortable shoes, bring water and sun protection. You can take guided tours or visit independently, but with attention to the rules of the park for environmental conservation. Some areas are only accessible with authorized guides.

TREKKING in the TAYRONA NATIONAL PARK

Trekking is one of the main activities in Tayrona Park. The trails pass through rainforests, mountains and spectacular beaches, connecting points such as Playa Cristal, Cabo San Juan beach and the archaeological site of Pueblito. The route can last from a few hours to a full day, with sections of medium difficulty. It is important to leave early, bring water and sun protection, and respect nature. The trekking offers an immersive experience in the biodiversity and indigenous culture of the region.
